With many nuclear and coal power stations built in the 1960s and 70s coming to the end of their lives in the next few years due to age and new emission restrictions, there is a need to find new low carbon ways of generating electricity to meet the country's ever growing energy demands.
The UK has the best wind resource in Europe and wind farms and can make a significant contribution to the UK energy mix reducing our dependency on imported resources. Onshore wind farms are a safe and currently the most cost-effective source of renewable energy. In the short to medium term, onshore wind power is expected to make up the largest proportion of the country's renewable energy source.
• Source 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020
• Generate up to 30% of electricity from renewable resources by 2020
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050
